George Leslie Hunter and the Scottish Colourists
George Leslie Hunter (1979 – 1931) was a Scottish painter, one of the Scottish Colourists school. Born on the island of Bute, Hunter emigrated to California when only 13 years of age.
Unfortunately, most of his early work was destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. He returned to Scotland soon afterwards, settling in Glasgow.
The so-called Scottish Colourists, of which Hunter was a prominent member, believed in colour above all else, and were influenced by the French Impressionists; some of Hunter’s work bears a striking similarity to those works.
